Branding and Marketing Strategies Workshop Offered Before GEDA Annual Conference
Branding and marketing are key, critical elements in economic development that set communities apart. As economic developers and communities compete in a global marketplace, it is critical that they have a distinctive brand message and identity, utilize strategic, multi-channel marketing approaches and engage effective tools and techniques to get results and return on investment.
The workshop, offered by the Carl Vinson Institute of Government, will be held at the Savannah Civic Center on Sept. 15 from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Get registered!

August Monthly Luncheon Recap
Ross King, Executive Director of ACCG (Association of County Commissioners of Georgia) spoke to the GEDA membership during the monthly luncheon program on August 17. In addition to addressing HB 170 (the transportation bill), open records statutes, media relations, and ACCG educational opportunities, Ross spoke pointedly about the new Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GSAB) and its new requirements for tax abatement disclosure. Committee News
Business Retention & Expansion - Matthew Thomas, Economic Development Manager for the city of Canton, and BRE committee member, has written an excellent piece on conducting BRE surveys. Canton was selected by the Atlanta Regional Commission to receive $104,000 as part of its Livable Centers Initiative (LCI) program. Professional Development – Saralyn Stafford reports that money is still available for an international mission, the Certified Economic Developer (CEcD) exam, and the Penn Worden grant. Funds from the Penn Worden grant may be used by GEDA members toward any accredited economic development program or by non-GEDA members representing a community not already represented in GEDA toward the cost of one year's membership within GEDA.
Four GEDA members were awarded scholarship grants to attend the 2015 Annual Conference from the GEDA Professional Development Committee, per Saralyn Stafford, Chair of the Committee and Division Director, Community Services with GEDA: Ashley Miller, Manager of Business and Industry, Macon Economic Development Commission; Mia Pressley, Workforce and Economic Development Solutions, Atlanta Regional Commission; Michelle Pfeffer, Director, Economic Development Authority of Claxton & Evans County; Nicole Ward, President/CEO, Cochran-Bleckley Industrial Development Authority and Chamber of Commerce. And one more grant was provided by Georgia Transmission, courtesy of Craig Heighton. That lucky recipient is Melissa “Missy” Kendrick, Executive Director, Barnesville-Lamar County Industrial Development Authority.

It is the intent of GEDA that this award will serve to encourage many Georgians to exert strong leadership in economic development public policy. To assure the highest possible qualifications and most exemplary recipients, the GEDA Board of Directors may elect not to present this very special award every year. Recipients must have clearly demonstrated by their work an enduring commitment, dedication, and leadership in advocating and implementing public policies that are essential for sustained quality economic development in Georgia.
