2015 Year-End Review by Tim Evans, GEDA Board Chair

With 2015 coming to a close, the 52nd year of the Georgia Economic Developers Association also comes to an end, and what a year it has been!  Georgia and its communities have enjoyed great success this year earning the #1 ranking honors from Site Selection three years in a row, and Georgia’s Quick Start Training program has held the ranking of #1 customized training program in the Nation for six years in a row.  These great achievements are the icing on the cake for what has been a great year and team effort among GEDA members to retain, grow and recruit new jobs and investment to Georgia.  The economy is on a roar, unemployment is declining and there are many corporate expansions in the pipeline.  In busy times, like this, teamwork and professionalism are important for maintaining long-term economic development success. GEDA Tours Georgia BioScience Training Center

The Georgia BioScience Training Center welcomed GEDA members for a special tour on December 7. The new Georgia BioScience Training Center is Georgia's declaration to the global market that our state is now a leading contender for locating new industries in the Life Sciences sector. Built, in part, to support Baxalta's $1 billion biomanufacturing facility in Covington, the new Center is operated by Georgia Quick Start.  The Center was designed to provide Quick Start's internationally acclaimed customized training for Baxalta's more than 1,500 new jobs. In addition, the Center was built to contain flexible capacity to attract and serve the workforce training needs of new bioscience/biotech companies looking to locate in the Southeast. With its state-of-the art, first-of-its-kind training technology, combined with Quick Start's customized training, the Georgia BioScience Training Center is just the latest evidence that Georgia is living up to its ranking as the No. 1 state in the U.S. for doing business.

Department of Defense Contract Spending in Georgia Survey

The GUARD initiative is the Georgia Department of Economic Development’s effort to understand the impact of Department of Defense contract work in Georgia.  Understanding who is affected will allow us to assist companies and communities who may be affected by downturns in DoD spending to create and attract new business while they retain and expand their existing business.  Much of this DoD contract work falls into manufacturing, aerospace and defense sectors, but almost 40% of the FY-2014 DoD contracts affected businesses in service sectors such as construction, facilities maintenance and medical support.

The Georgia Department of Economic Development needs your help to get the most accurate picture of DoD contract spending in Georgia.  With DoD spending dropping by 25% in the last four years, we need to assist companies and communities to develop diversification strategies in order to be more resilient to further changes in DoD spending. Please take a few moments to answer this 8 question survey and share it with other companies in your community who may be doing DoD contract work. Please submit all responses by December 15.  https://survey.chmuraecon.com/survey/start/54

The survey responses will be aggregated into an economic impact model by Chmura Economics and Analytics. You can view the model on the GDEcD website at http://www.georgia.org/competitive-advantages/workforce-division/programs-initiatives/guard-initiative/

Thank you for your help. If you have any questions regarding the project, please contact the GUARD Initiative Senior Project Manager, Bo Causey, at bcausey@georgia.org or 678-313-6486.

Public Policy Committee: GEDA's diverse membership often means a diversity of opinions on issues.  Therefore, GEDA best serves its members as an information resource.  We help members understand critical issues and legislation, as well as how to use the legislative process effectively.  Our role is to "educate, not advocate."  Read the 2016 Policy Recommendations here.
